Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
What is Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (mHBOT) is a natural therapy in which a person is exposed to increased atmospheric pressure inside an inflatable chamber. The typical pressure reaches between 1.1 and 1.4 atmospheres, which can be expressed as 1-4 pounds per square inch. The increase in pressure allows more oxygen to reach the cells of the body which has many healing and therapeutic benefits.
How does mild hyperbaric therapy work?
According to Henry’s Law of Physics, any increase in atmospheric pressure allows more gas to be dissolved into any given liquid. Henry’s Law is displayed in every can of soda. When soda is canned at the factory, it is put under pressure so that more carbon dioxide can be dissolved into the soda causing it to be carbonated. When the can is opened, the pressure is released. Without the pressure to keep the gas dissolved, the soda will become flat in a few hours.
The same principal applies to oxygen and plasma, the liquid part of the blood. When the body is under pressure, plasma, cerebral fluid (around the brain and spinal cord) and synovial fluid (around joints) will dissolve more oxygen than they would if they were not under pressure. Not only does this increase the amount of available oxygen to the tissue, it allows oxygen to reach areas of the body that would normally be difficult to reach.
Why does extra oxygen help to heal tissue?
In his book The Oxygen Revolution, Dr. Paul Harch explains that the body has only one way it responds to damage. This one way is through the inflammatory reaction. While many different diseases and injuries listed here may seem unrelated they all involve the inflammatory reaction. Decreased oxygen and blood flow to an area cause an effect called the inflammatory cascade. The inflammatory cascade actually causes the body to destroy it’s own tissues in an effort to begin the rebuilding process. When different systems of the body are involved we get different symptoms, hence the list here.
This inflammatory process further decreases blood flow to the injured area until, we believe, that many of the cells, while still alive, do not have the energy necessary to perform their functions. They cease to do things such as sending neurological impulses or respond to their environment. Putting oxygen directly into the bodies fluids give these cells a chance to fully heal and begin to function and respond. S.P.E.C.T. scans of human brains before and after hyperbaric treatments (both mild and non-mild) show an increase of cellular activity in areas of the brain that low function before treatments.
Why Have I not heard more about this?
Oxygen is not patentable and as such no pharmaceutical company would pay for the research. The research is happening, in clinics all over the country, performed by Dr’s like Dr. Anschutz who believe that anecdotal evidence is as important as double blind studies. But don’t make a mistake and assume those kinds of studies are not being done. Information on current studies can be found at andwww.ihause.org . There are also several videos on Youtube of patients who have recovered with HBOT therapy.
Is It Safe?
Yes! The hyperbaric chamber is completely safe. Since our chamber uses filtered ambient air, it can be used regularly without the danger of oxygen toxicity to the body.
The majority of clients report a pleasant, comfortable experience. In addition, mHBOT can be a safe adjunct to most other therapies.
Although mild hyperbaric therapy has been reported to be beneficial for a wide range of conditions, this therapy is not meant as a cure for any condition or disease.
