Therapeutic , Deep tissue, Sports Massage
(Lisa & Jeff)
These massages work on the deeper layers of muscles to improve circulation and speed the healing process. When muscles are tight or in spasm this causes fibrous muscle tissue to harden, this is what gives us all the feeling of “knots” in our back and shoulder area. The knots are a development of toxins, congestions and lower blood flow. A deep tissue massage will work on eliminating this tension and most importantly the ongoing absence of these toxins.
Chinese Cupping (Lisa)
Traditionally practiced in Eastern Medicine cupping is an excellent method for treating tight and aching muscles, digestive, and respiratory problems and removal of toxins in the body.
This is a gentle no pain procedure that is becoming increasingly popular in our western culture. Circular colouration in the skin is often present after a treatment however, this will usually fade within 3-7 days. The deep colouration in the skin indicate a deep seated blood stagnation which is highly beneficial to the client.
Cupping is used to expel toxins from areas of pain and tightness and uses glass cups, held by suction, to massage the body. The action on the nervous system can be sedating and the client can experience a deep state of relaxation. Traditionally the cups are placed on the back, shoulders and lower back. After treatment clients can experience a feeling of lightness and flexibility in the area which was creating pain or range of movement restrictions. Cupping can be either stationary or in massage. Stationary cups are left on the skin for 5 to 15 minutes to facilitate the release of stagnant blood, pathogenic factors and dispel internal heat. Massage cupping uses oil so the cup can glide over the skin to release tension and congestion in the muscles. Most cupping procedures will create a red to dark red circle on the skin but will disappear within a week. Other conditions that respond well to cupping include: fibromyalgia, anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, sciatica, and asthma.
Reiki Healing (Genevieve)
An ancient but powerful healing. Reiki is universal life force that surrounds and sustains us all. The facilitator acts as a channel to allow universal energy of love and light to flow thru them and out of their hands onto the person receiving the healing. This healing improves vitality, relieves stress, unblocks and balances energy centres and enhances the body’s innate ability to heal itself. This form of healing is not a mainstream kind of treatment but we recommend that you try it at least once and enjoy the benefits of such a session
Tuina is an Oriental Bodywork Therapy that has been used in China for 2,000 years. Tuina uses the traditional Chinese medical theory of the flow of Qi through the meridians as its basic therapeutic orientation. Through the application of massage and manipulation techniques Tuina seeks to establish a more harmonious flow of Qi through the system of channels and collaterals, allowing the body the naturally heal itself.
Tuina methods include the use of hand techniques to massage the soft tissue (muscles and tendons) of the body, acupressure techniques to directly affect the flow of Qi , and manipulation techniques to realign the musculoskeletal and ligamentous relationships (bone-setting). External herbal poultices, compresses, liniments, and salves may be used to enhance the other therapeutic methods.
In a typical session, the client, wearing loose clothing and no shoes, lies on a table or floor mat. The practitioner examines the specific problems of the client and begins to apply a specific treatment protocol. The major focus of application is upon specific pain sites, acupressure points, energy meridians, and muscles and joints. Advanced Tuina practitioners may also use Chinese herbs to facilitate quicker healing. Sessions last from 30 minutes to 1 hour. Depending on the specific problems of the client, they may return for additional treatments. The client usually feels relaxed but energized by the treatment.
Tuina is now being popularized in this country as a powerful therapeutic extension of traditional western massage methods. Tuina's simplicity and focus on specific problems, rather than a more generalized treatment, make it both an excellent alternative and/or extension of the Swedish-style massage. By utilizing treatments of shorter duration, it can be used in a variety of settings, including home, office, clinic or hospital. It is well suited for both the professional massage therapist or the active, health conscious individual.
Trigger Point Therapy (Lisa & Jeff)
Trigger points are very common. They are also referred to as muscle knots. Trigger point therapy is a bodywork technique that involves the applying of pressure to tender muscle tissue in order to relieve pain and dysfunction. It is very effective. Massage and trigger point therapy are performed together.
Myofacial Release (Lisa & Jeff)
A gentle blend of stretching and massage, Myofascial Release Therapy uses hands-on manipulation of the entire body to promote healing, release and pain relief. The therapy is based on the idea that poor posture, physical injury, illness and emotional stress can throw the body out of alignment and cause its intricate web of fascia (that surrounds our muscles) to become tight and constricted.
Foot Reflexology (Lisa)
Foot reflexology is a simple, non-invasive method to help balance the body. It has been described as a natural therapy that requires the application of a specific type of pressure on particular areas of the feet. It is based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet which correspond to every part of the body. Reflexology serves to relax, improve circulation and promote a general feeling of wellness.
